First, never, never turn the hands anti clockwise to adjust the time. Start by turning the minute hand forward to the 12 until the clock strikes the hour, take it very slowly for the last 5 minute interval leading up to the 12, make a mental note on how many times the chimes strike. Now you need to move the hour hand to coincide with the chimes, ie if the chimes struck 5 then move the hour hand to 5. The clock should now say 5 o’clock. To test now move the minute hand forward 55 minutes to 5 to 6. This will let the clock set its mechanism up to strike 6 o’clock. Let the clock run to 6 o’clock and see that the chimes match the time. You must also pause at each half hour interval and let the clock strike the half hour or you can put the chimes out of sinc and you will find the clock striking the hour at the half hour interval. If this does not work then it starts to get a bit technical….Ian

The clocks are the same, except the ones known as
carriage clocks featured a handle on top, and were originally used as travel clocks. These clocks often sit on mantles, a shelf that projects from a wall above a fireplace.

See source for pictures of mantle clocks with and without handles.

This day has a deep and profound meaning for all of us who went through it but I have honestly been taken aback by many many of the reactions I’ve seen in people who were not directly affected by this storm. We have repaired our clocks, cleaned up the mess and are looking to the future on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We feel closer as a community and try to support one another because we have A LOT of change to adjust to.

I am always surprised at the depth of compassion people show us and also at the occasional raw condemnation and hatred shown. My question–Why did this event move so many people so much, for good and for bad?

I feel like I must absolve people of their guilt sometimes when I am talking to them (people from outside).

I have lived in Florida for 45 + years. I understand what you are saying! They are surprised that we are still cleaning up from the 4 we had the year before K. Guess what I am expecting at least a STORM this evening or early in the A.M. We are ready so we should be safe maybe! I think it is a combination of things. First they are scared it could happen to them, and second It is truly overwhelming. Just to much to handle!

It has two holes on the front for winding

Turn the minute hand clockwise until the clock is set. If it has chimes, you may have to loosen the nut that holds the hands in place and reposition them so the time agrees with the chimes. When you switch to daylight savings time, if the clock cannot be stopped, move it ahead 11 hours. Don’t try turning the hands backward as it usually messes the chime and time settings.

no electric clocks just wind up.

You can find a number of these clocks at the following locations:

There are many more options, but looking in antique stores online and in person appears to be your best bet.
